The Sanford-Brown IADT School of Design will host an exclusive Student Showcase at Tampa Bay Fashion Week 2016 on Friday, Sept. 23.
Featured Student Designers:
Smyrne Charles has always been passionate about fashion. Her mom used to make her clothes for school and church when she was younger and she would watch and help her sometimes by passing the scissors and being her fit model. That’s what inspired her to want to learn about fashion design.
Being a native Floridian, her love of the beaches, palm trees, and the beautiful sunny weather inspired the look and design of her swimsuits.
Joshua Duck is a student at Sanford-Brown College/IADT working towards achieving his Bachelors of Fine Arts in Fashion Design by the Spring of 2017. His designs have been published in Tampa Bay Style Magazine. Josh finds it important to be involved in community activities and has volunteered for multiple charitable events and organizations including, but not limited to, Family Center on Deafness, and FMC: Foundation of Caring, and 2016 Equality Florida, St. Pete Gala.
After graduating he will continue to specialize in designing Menswear.
Lakesha Johnson was born and raised in “The Muck”. The Muck is actually a really small town in Florida called Belle Glade. Lakesha had no clue as a child that the years of torturing her mom by constantly cutting up her clothes, taking all her mom’s safety pins to stick on her clothes, and carrying around a cat-shaped purse was a sign that she was going to pursue a career in fashion. When they went shopping Lakesha often left the mall disappointed. She had these ideas of the outfit she wanted to buy, but could never find them. She then realized she couldn’t find these outfits because they only existed in her imagination.
She currently attends Sanford Brown College/IADT and hopes to one day have her designs hanging in women’s closets all over the world. Lakesha loves to incorporate home décor fabric in her designs. Although she loves designing women’s fashion, if blessed with the opportunity, she wants to design a children’s clothing line to give them away to needy children once a year.
Rachel Ternival says that her passion for the fashion industry was predestined. Rachel was born in Little Falls New York. She moved back to her parent’s native land 15 days after birth to Croix-Des-Bouquets, Haiti. Though her family didn’t have much, fashion was instilled in her. As a little girl, Rachel remembers taking her mother’s skirts and using safety pins to create a new fashion piece. After she was done wearing it, she removed all of the safety pins and quietly placed it back in her mother’s closet. She believes in the notion that style is in everyone, it just needs to be discovered and ever since she was a little girl she is determined to discover hers. In high school, she enrolled in the fashion design program in hopes of eventually pursuing a career in fashion design. Her skills qualified her to enter as a contestant at the FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America) competition and won first place.
Rachel currently attends Sanford-Brown College/IADT where she is pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design. She aspires to launch a fashion school in Haiti where she will be able to give the same opportunities to aspiring designers to express their culturally enriched personality through fashion.
